Simply Snackin’ founder Sue Kramlich asked me to explain why I’ve purchased hundreds of Signature Beef snacks over the past two years, and why it’s not only a mainstay in my health and fitness plan, but an absolutely critical part of my continued success.
I told her I’d be happy to talk about my favorite high-protein snack, but that I should probably start with a little background about me first.
When I was 51 years old, I discovered, much to my dismay, that my weight had climbed to 278 pounds.
Achieving a “healthy” body weight while maintaining a high level of muscular and cardiovascular fitness was something that had eluded me for most of my adult life.
In my early 50s I wasn’t able to do a single pull-up, and I’d gotten to the point where I’d accepted the brutal reality that I’d probably never again get back into good shape.
In January 2018, however, I stumbled upon a few important nutrition facts that led me to a sustainable 80-pound weight loss, and triggered several other discoveries that helped me get into the best physical condition of my life less than three years shy of my 60th birthday.
A critical part of my sustained success has been the creation of very simple sets of “rules” that serve as “guardrails” to keep me on track.
These rules, which easily fit one side of a piece of paper the size of a business card, have been customized, often through a process of trial and error, to help optimize my nutrition and fitness outcomes.
My nutrition rules only have six bullet points, the last one of which is shown below and addresses Sue’s question about why each month I go through so much of Simply Snackin’s flagship flavor—the Signature Beef.
Rule #6: I keep a supply of protein-rich, highly satiating foods on hand.
One of the keys to my nutrition plan is hitting a daily protein target, and eating foods that provide satiety, and therefore keep me away from hyper processed food containing high levels of sugar and other ingredients that have derailed my progress in the past.,
Among the foods that fit this description for me are foods like beef, chicken, salmon, eggs, and Greek yogurt.
But the one challenge I often face is how to have a supply of high-protein, satiating foods easily accessible when I’m engaged in activities such as traveling, cycling or hiking and may not have access to my kitchen refrigerator for extended periods of time.
Over the past few years, I’ve learned how important it is to address this potential problem in advance, so finding a healthy snack doesn’t take a lot of time or concentration that may not be available in those situations.
My solution has been to stock up on the Simply Snackin’ Signature Beef snacks and keep a generous supply in my backpack or briefcase so that when the cravings hit I’m well prepared.
I recently brought about 50 Simply Snackin’ Signature Beef snacks with me on a weekend trip to South Carolina for an SEC football game. They were great to have on hand in the airport and on the plane (a fantastic alternative to airline food). They were also a big hit during the tailgate party!
